How to give & request access to the Threads App
Article Content

The Threads app can be a little confusing for those who haven’t jumped on its bandwagon; it looks like a standalone social media platform, but is actually a part of Instagram. Originally created as a direct competitor to X (Twitter), it now has over 400 million monthly active users and continues to grow as a text-centric platform to complement Instagram’s visual focus.

In January 2026, Threads surpassed X in daily active users on mobile, moving it from an Twitter clone to a solid alternative to X.

TL;DR: The safest way to add or give someone access to manage your Threads account is done via Meta Business Suite and business portfolios.

Sharing access to a Threads account

At the point of writing, giving someone access to your Threads account is handled in Meta Business Suite. You can add someone and give them access to a business portfolio that contains both the Threads and professional Instagram account of the same username. There is currently no in-app method to request or give access to another person via the Threads app.

Error 2: Mismatch in Threads and Instagram account usernames

Both your Threads and Instagram usernames have to match. Yes, if you want to run ads, cross-post on both platforms, and manage user and admin access securely, you need both usernames to match.

Solution: Change either of your usernames

Error 3: Insufficient permissions/control over the portfolio

If you see any of these messages when you try to add a Threads account, it means you don’t have the right permissions.

“Only people with full control can add this account.”
“You don’t have sufficient permissions for this business.”
“Action not allowed: Missing required permissions.”
“You must be an admin to complete this request.”

Solution: Approach someone with full control

Ask person with full control to the business portfolio to either:

  1. Add the Threads account and assign you permission afterwards
  2. Or give you full control so you can add the Threads account

How to create a Threads account

Step 1: Simply head to Threads via the mobile app, clicking through a Threads post shown in your Instagram feed, or the Threads website (https://www.threads.com/).

Step 2: You’ll be asked to sign in to an Instagram account if you aren’t logged in on the device yet.

Step 3: Follow through to create your Threads account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give someone direct access to my Threads account?

If you share direct access via password sharing, that means you'll also give that person full access to your Instagram account. If you're managing or sharing Theads professionally or formally (even semi-formally), we recommend managing account access through Meta Business Suite to keep things secure.

Why can’t my team member add a Threads account to the business portfolio?

This usually happens because they don’t have full control (admin access) in Business Manager. Only users with full control can add or claim assets like Instagram (and by extension, Threads).

How do I give an agency access to my Threads account?

To give an agency access, you need to:

  1. Add them to your business in Meta Business Suite
  2. Assign them access to your connected Instagram account
  3. Ensure they have the correct permission level (ideally full control, not just partial access)

Since Threads is linked to Instagram, this is currently the only supported method.

Can I share my Threads login details instead?

No, this is strongly discouraged. Sharing login credentials:

  • Violates Meta’s terms of service
  • Creates security risks (2FA, password resets, account recovery issues)
  • Makes it impossible to manage permissions or revoke access cleanly

Instead, always use role-based access via Meta Business tools.

What level of access should I give an agency for Threads?

For most agency use cases, you should grant:

  • Full control (if they need to manage assets or integrations), or
  • At minimum, sufficient Instagram permissions to publish and manage content

Be cautious with limited roles—these often block key actions like connecting accounts or running campaigns.

Can multiple people manage a Threads account?

Yes—but only indirectly. Multiple users can collaborate by having access to the connected Instagram account through Meta Business Suite. Threads itself doesn’t yet support multi-user access controls.

Why does my agency still not have access after I added them?

Common reasons include:

  • They were added with partial access instead of full control
  • The Instagram account wasn’t properly assigned
  • The account isn’t connected to the correct business portfolio
  • Pending access requests weren’t accepted

Double-check permissions in Business Settings to resolve this.

Is Threads account access the same as Facebook Page access?

No. Threads access is tied to Instagram, not directly to Facebook Pages. While both are managed in Meta Business tools, they are separate assets with different permission structures.

What to do if your Threads account is banned?

Meta’s bots regularly run automated reviews on Threads accounts, leading to waves of account bans and restrictions.

You’ll find out in the Accounts Status in Settings https://www.threads.com/settings/account_status

Your best bet is to submit an appeal, or try and reach a live customer service agent if you are Meta Verified.
